Orientation 2016

Screenshot 2019-06-12 at 7.46.03 PM.png

Warwick Singsoc's annual Orientation Camp was held from 6th-7th August and involved an exciting mix of beach games, puzzle solving and inter-OG mingling amongst freshers.

While gloomy weather and logistical mishaps threatened to unravel our plans, the enthusiasm of fresher and senior alike as well as the ability of camp facilitators think on their feet kept everyone's spirits high. Indeed, despite the occasional lulls in the momentum of the Orientation, everyone remained upbeat and easy-going, thus creating a relaxed atmosphere in which people could talk and get to know each other freely. On Day 2 the camp ended on a good note at Marina Bay, where we took a group picture against the beautiful evening skyline to commemorate the successful completion of Orientation.

As a whole, we hope the freshers enjoyed themselves thoroughly! Special thanks to each and every senior who helped make Orientation happen; to better times and beyond in the incoming academic term ahead!

Warwick Summer Games 2016

Since its inauguration in 2009, the Warwick Summer Games has been held annually for Singaporeans studying in the UK to gather for a day of sporting fun in Singapore. This year, the 8th edition of the games was held in Republic Polytechnic and comprised of eight sports (Basketball, Table Tennis, Floorball, Frisbee, Netball, Soccer, Captain’s Ball and Touch Rugby) and two games (Bridge and Monopoly Deal). Continuing from previous years, proceeds from WSG were donated to our adopted beneficiary – the Children’s Aid Society.

We were very honoured to have Mr David Chua, Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Council as this year's Guest of Honour. He shared his experiences studying at Imperial College London, the benefits of overseas education and emphasised on sports being an essential part of an all-rounded education.

Despite the haze that occurred during lunchtime, the spirit of all participants was not dampened. Teams competed fiercely during every game, trying to win the honour and bragging rights of calling themselves champions of WSG 2016.  Thanks to our various sponsors, all participants were kept hydrated and energized, which kept their spirits high throughout the day.

After a long day filled with many exciting matches, Team LSE were crowned champions of WSG 2016! Congratulations to LSE!

UKBound 2016

UKBound is an annual pageant organised by the Imperial College Singapore Society, primarily for Singaporean students heading to the UK for their studies. This year, Kingsley and Serena represented Warwick Singapore Society.

Screenshot 2019-06-12 at 7.57.06 PM.png

"UKBound was indeed a very enriching experience. It was a time of firsts and whilst many things did not entirely come easy to me, it was a truly unique experience, one I will never regret. Through this journey, many wonderful friendships were forged as we worked hard and encouraged each other in hopes of putting up an entertaining performance for everyone. I will never forget the moments where we panicked (when it came to dealing with the bikini of course), and laughed at our silliness together. I am so thankful that I got the chance to represent Warwick in UKBound and I’m honestly really grateful for all the support and guidance. I hope those who came down to support enjoyed the show!"

"UKBound 2016 was one of the best takeaways I had before leaving Singapore to study at the University of Warwick. In the beginning, I was really uncertain whether or not to participate in this pageant as the training was really intense: we only had 3 weeks to put up a good show. Lots of commitment, dedication and sacrifice were put into this, ranging from trying to look good for the camera as I continue to sweat profusely under the hot sun to training till past midnight and lastly, the toughest one - keeping a really healthy diet. Pushing away the temptations to just gobble down ice creams, cakes, fried chicken, french fries etc, it really tested my mental strength. It was even harder than serving the army (at least I get ice cream in military camp). Nonetheless, all these hardships were worth it. I will never forget the memories and friendships forged because they were the most important aspect of my experience. Last but not least, I would like to once again thank everyone who came down to support me during the event and my seniors who convinced me to take part in this pageant. Without you guys, I would not have been crowned UkBound King for this year's UkBound 2016."

Christmas Dinner 2016

Screenshot 2019-06-12 at 8.10.44 PM.png

This year, Warwick Singapore Society held our annual Christmas Dinner at Whittle’s Restaurant in Leamington Spa. Whittle’s Restaurant is tucked away in the beautiful Binswood Hall, just a two minutes’ walk from Regent Court Shopping Centre.

The 19th century Victorian décor, laid-back atmosphere and delectable food made it the ideal place for a well-deserved end-of-term celebration.

The night was filled with much laughter and joy. The guests were welcomed into an immaculately decorated dining hall, complete with hand-written place cards and Christmas crackers.

As everyone feasted on the sumptuous food, they were entertained by emcees (and newly-elected freshers’ reps) Sean and Alex, who engaged the audience with games such as Guess The Celebrity and Treasure Hunt. One guest from each table had the ‘honour’ of playing the Cookie Game where they had to get a cookie from their forehead into their mouth without using their hands. The battle was practically over before it even begun as Gabriel Koh managed to pull off this unenviable feat within a minute amidst rapturous applause from the crowd. Everyone who was added to Santa’s ‘Nice’ List also participated in a gift exchange, with presents delivered personally by our very own Santa Claus (Alex).

To conclude the night, we held our annual lucky draw which included attractive prizes such as RyanAir vouchers and a toaster.

We were heartened by the attendance for this year’s Christmas dinner and we thank everyone for their support! This event would not have been possible without the blood, sweat and tears put in by our EXCO and Freshers’ Reps, to whom we express our heartfelt gratitude: Melvin, Verdi, Sean Ang, Steffi, Shannon, Ching Yi, Rachel, Jun Meng, Terence, Alex and Sean Tan.

Ski Trip 2016

Screenshot 2019-06-12 at 8.12.48 PM.png

Warwick Singapore Society's highly anticipated Ski Trip was held in Val d'Isere, a ski resort located in the picturesque French Alps. Linked to neighbouring Tignes to form a ski area of 300km of pistes, the French resort offers high-quality slopes for everyone from complete beginners to veterans. This year, a total of 40 people embarked on an adventure from the 10th to 17th of December for a fun-filled week of skiing and snowboarding! We trust that our members had lots of fun once again during the trip and that it was an experience worth remembering!

Potluck 2017

Screenshot 2019-06-12 at 8.14.27 PM.png

Warwick Singapore Society is back with our termly potluck, held at the Social Sciences Café! It was a lovely time spent catching up with friends and making new ones after the winter break, all while enjoying the food prepared by our very own home cooks.

The potluck saw our members bringing goodies such as Korean Spicy noodles, Chicken Rice, Salted Egg Chicken, Char Siew and Matcha cakes. Everything was gone in no time.

We hope that everybody had an enjoyable time catching up with fellow Singaporeans and getting to know new people.

See you at our next potluck!

Paintball 2017

We hope that everyone had fun and we look forward to seeing more collaborative events as such in the future.

Chinese New Year Dinner 2017

Screenshot 2019-06-12 at 8.20.21 PM.png

Our annual Chinese New Year Dinner this year was hosted together with Birmingham Singapore Society and saw Singaporeans from Warwick, Birmingham and Nottingham come together for an evening of festive celebration at Chung Ying Garden, Birmingham. The dinner saw over 200 guests from the three universities, including international friends who wanted to have a taste of how we celebrate our lunar new year! The spread included favourites such as sweet and sour pork, roasted duck, char siew, and last but not least, our beloved Yu Sheng!

The night’s games and lucky draws were hosted by our very own Alexander Zhong, and Maddi Tan from Birmingham. The night was kicked off by a singing performance by Birmingham’s Justin, and followed by a traditional lion dance which brought us all a cure for homesickness. Games such as “guess the dish”, and “red packet treasure hunt” kept our guests entertained throughout the night. A lucky draw also saw some guests leaving with prizes ranging from pastes and sauces to Ryanair and shopping vouchers!

Warwick Singapore Society hopes that everyone enjoyed their night, and we wish everyone a prosperous year of the rooster ahead! See you next year!

Production 2017

Screenshot 2019-06-12 at 8.24.10 PM.png

For the first time in it's 10-year history, the Singsoc production based itself on an original script, written by our very own talented Edward Eng (Year 2, PPE). After months of rehearsals, the cast, which consisted Chandra Prakash (Accounting and Finance), Iffah (Sociology and Politics), Jeremy Chin (Sociology and Politics), Jodie Loke (PPE), Okky Tok (PPE) and Serena Russell (Management), put up a play Singaporeans could be proud of, displaying the often unseen and unheard personal insecurities of millennials within a society which from the outside appears pure and perfect, on the backdrop of a hypothetical terrorist attack happening on home soil, in the heartlands. The society would like to take this opportunity to thank the producers, Ching Yi and Joshua Ting, the directors Ang Kia Yee and Dominic Nah, the stage manager Alexander Zhong, the props team Melvin Chua, Kingsley Tan and Sean Tan, the lights and sounds manager Gerald Chak, as well as everyone else who took time off to be at the show, and supported us every step of the way. We hope you enjoyed the show!

Generation Games 2017

Screenshot 2019-06-13 at 3.20.05 PM.png

On 29 April 2017, we held our annual generation games, which pitted the first years against the seniors in sports such as football, frisbee, badminton and basketball. An annual tradition, the games are held in the summer term, before the exam period to give everyone a chance to relax and get some exercise done before revision kicks in proper. It is also a rare opportunity for senior-junior bonding, as well as for team spirit to be forged between members of the society. In the end, the competition became more friendly and everyone had a chance to play, which showed the closely-knit spirit within the society. We hope everyone enjoyed their run out today!

Graduation Dinner 2017

Screenshot 2019-06-13 at 3.16.19 PM.png

On the 5th of May 2017, the society held its annual graduation dinner at the Episode Hotel in Leamington Spa, to celebrate the achievements and contributions of our graduating cohort, the class of 2017. It was a night of glamour and elegance, where our seniors dressed up and enjoyed a night of relaxed conversation, good food and live music. We sincerely hope that the graduating cohort had a night as enjoyable as their three to four years in Warwick, and bring with them memories they will never forget. Once again, a big thank you, and the best wherever life takes you next!
