Freshers' Orientation 2019

Our Warwick Singapore Society Freshers’ Orientation Camp (FOC) is held annually in order to provide an opportunity for our Freshers to get to know one another, as well as their seniors, prior to their departure to the UK. This year, our FOC was held from 27th to 29th July, with about 30 Freshers and 20 Orientation Group Leaders (OGLs) and volunteers!

We began our first day by gathering at Pasir Ris Bus Interchange and playing some icebreakers in order to get to know one another. After splitting into our four Orientation Groups (OGs: Neon, Kasbah, Smack and Assembly), we headed over to Pasir Ris Park, where we played a multitude of team games designed to help forge bonds between our participants within their OGs. Despite the blazing heat, we kept our spirits high and ended the day by rewarding ourselves with a well-deserved meal with our respective OGs and a refreshing shower!

Our second day began early yet again, with everyone heading over to Downtown East to begin our Amazing Race! The race led the four OGs across various landmarks in the East side of Singapore, where they completed challenges in order to receive the clue to their next destination. After lunch, we headed over to Changi Beach to commence our beach games, which gave everyone a refreshing splash of water to combat the heat! Tired and hungry, we ended the day with a wholesome BBQ, where we invited our society’s second-year and third-year students to share their experiences about life at Warwick and share some advice and tips with them. The fun wasn’t over yet though, as we ended the camp with circling, which is a Warwick tradition that puts a lively twist on common drinking games!

Not wanting to leave their newfound friends so soon, many simply refused to sleep, staying up and chatting into the late-night and early morning hours despite everyone having to wake up early to check-out the next morning.

Although our FOC is smaller relative to those offered by our local universities, our smaller size was ultimately also the reason behind our camp's success; in a smaller group, our Freshers had the opportunity to spend more quality time with each other and develop deeper bonds within the Singaporean community in the University of Warwick. Above all, we hope you all thoroughly enjoyed our camp and were able to create lasting friendships for your Warwick journey ahead!

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of Orientation, especially the OGLs and EXCO, who selflessly sacrificed their personal time and efforts to give our new Freshers a meaningful experience. We would also like to thank our Events Director, Matthew Seet, for his unwavering dedication and painstakingly thorough planning of the camp. Lastly, we would also like to thank the Overseas Singaporean Unit for sponsoring us, without whom this event would not have been possible.

Meet our directors from the Warwick Singapore Office who will be able to offer you professional advice and assistance as you embark on your new adventure!

Our Warwick Singapore Society Executive Committee (EXCO) will also be present to answer any questions you may have about the University. As such, you will have the opportunity to interact with and seek advice from our current students about their personal experiences at the University, ranging from topics such as accommodation to the subjects being offered. Find out why our students chose Warwick and if Warwick is the right choice for you! You may also inquire about your degree programme through our EXCO and on top of that, you will be given details about our upcoming Freshers’ Orientation Camp and Warwick Summer Games!

This year, our PDB was held on the 3 July 2019, 7.30pm at The Arts House, Gallery II, 1 Old Parliament Lane. The Singapore Office and Warwick Singapore Society EXCO would like to extend our gratitude to all offer holders and parents for taking the time to attend our PDB this year. We sincerely hope you found the session fruitful and had most of your questions answered.

Warwick Summer Games 2019

31 August 2019

EXCO 19/20

31 August marked the biggest event that Warwick Singsoc organises every year! 350 participants from 16 UK Singaporean Societies came  together at Bukit Gombak Stadium to play sports like Frisbee, basketball, and captain’s ball for a day of friendly competition. Games were played, rivalries were formed, and medals were given (shoutout to our own Cheryl Nah for winning Warwick's only gold medal at monopoly!) We would like to thank everyone who joined us for making it a success, and our endless regards to our volunteers and liaisons from the various universities for helping making the event possible in the first place.

Welcome Week 2019

Welcome Week marks the start of every freshers’ university lives here at Warwick. It is the week before the school term starts, which also means you have no classes for this week!

During Welcome Week, there will be many activities planned by the Student Union, the University and your faculty of study. You will also get to know more about the offerings on campus (societies, sports, facilities, support offices).

Additionally, there will be socialising opportunities with other international students and your new flatmates with whom you are going to live with for your first year!

The Warwick Singapore Society will have a booth at the Societies Fair on 25th September 2019, so stop by to say hi or ask us anything!

Dates: 23-29 September 2019

Production 2020

24 February, 2020, 7PM

This year, Singsoc's annual production was written and directed by our own Singsoc member Jan Angelo M. Balagtas. ⁣

Held at the Copper Rooms 1 in the Warwick SU, our play "A Wedding's a Good Excuse to Go Home" is a culmination of months of late night practices and hard work, and our event would not have been possible without the support of an amazing audience.

'To anyone watching the play,⁣

Thank you very much for taking the time, even if it's just because your friend is in the play or you were forced to come. Your attendance is appreciated. ⁣

The play is a piece of work inspired from events that happened in my life in the past year. As I reflected on them, I realized that there are some friendships, relationships, situationships or whatever that were just not meant to be: and that's fine. It's 2020 man, cut that toxic stuff out of your life. ⁣

Also, take a shot everytime someone says "fine" or "okay"!!⁣

To the cast and crew, ⁣

Thank you. Thank you for giving your heart and being true to the piece and for giving a bit of yourselves to every rehearsal. ⁣

I hope that you have enjoyed this experience and that it has enriched your university life. ⁣

I can only give you my heart because I'm broke but know that if I had a lot of money I'd buy each of you an expensive but sustainable piece of clothing.⁣'
⁣- Angelo

'The Singapore Society Production has been an amazing opportunity to create something with my fellow SingSoc members and friends! Every year, we put up a play to showcase what it means to be Singaporean to our newfound family and friends.⁣

This year, we explore the complexities of distance and time through a play written and directed by none other than our own Angelo, who has done all this on top of his degree! The play draws from all our own experiences being far from home, and we've learnt so much in the process!⁣

I'd like to thank all our wonderful cast and crew, who boldly volunteered for a play they knew nothing about going into, and steadfastly gave their 100% even when rehearsals stretched late into the night.⁣

We started out as a group with varying backgrounds and experiences in theatre, but that hasn't stopped us from working together to have fun and create something memorable! ⁣

I hope that this spirit will come through, and you'll enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed putting it up!⁣'

At our 2nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Spring, our President will do a Year-in-Review and update our members on SingSoc events that have happened over the past academic year and what we have accomplished as a society.

In addition, the Spring AGM also serves as a platform for the upcoming Executive Committee (EXCO) Elections. As the academic year approaches an end, nominations will be opened and members will be given an opportunity to run for office or nominate their peers for the following positions in EXCO:

1. President
2. Vice-President
3. Secretary
4. Treasurer
5. Corporate Communications Director
6. Cultural Director
7. Events Director
8. Marketing Director
9. Sports Director

Prior to the AGM, every nominee will be required to prepare an election manifesto which will entail a short description about themselves and their reasons for running for office.

On the actual day of the AGM, only official members of the Society will be eligible to vote. Members who are unable to attend the AGM will be allowed to cast their vote online, while all other members will be required to exercise their vote during the AGM.

Once the new members of the EXCO have been elected, the incumbent President will officially end the AGM and close the academic year for the Society.
