Warwick Singapore Society

The Basics

The University of Warwick Singapore Society (Warwick Singsoc) is a 160-odd member society under the umbrella of the University of Warwick Students' Union Societies Federation. Its stated aims are to serve as a home-away-from-home for overseas Singaporeans studying in Warwick, as well as to serve as a platform from which non-Singaporeans can experience Singaporean culture. This is done through the organisation of various activities ranging from talks with public servants and ministers, to recreational and team-building activities.

Keeping in Touch

Warwick Singsoc regularly hosts various visiting pubic servants, corporate leaders and other notable speakers to engage with members and keep them abreast of developments back in Singapore. Members are given a forum through which they can communicate with industry and public leaders on a personal level, to increase their engagement with Singaporean society, business and politics. Some events are also organised to give members a chance to improve chances of obtaining internships and attachments during the Summer, through skills-training or direct engagement with potential employers.

Strong Foundations

One of the key roles of Warwick Singsoc is to welcome Singaporean Freshers to the University and to help them get settled in, while building up a strong support structure of friends with whom they can share their university experience. Through events such as Pre-departure Briefing, Pre-departure Orientation and Warwick Summer Games, new members are given the chance to develop a core of peers with whom to share the trials and triumphs of packing, travel and living abroad for the first time.  A shopping trip to nearby retail outlets is also held at the start of the academic year to help settle the Freshers in.

Freshers are also able to get to know Orientation Group Leaders and older members, who can give them advice about what to expect in the first few weeks of term, through ice-breakers and sports. The friends made in these initial stages often go on to stick together through university, from cooking and hanging out in first year, to becoming house mates later on.

Family-away-from-home

Once at Warwick, Singsoc also organises various social events to keep members in touch with each other, and life beyond academics. For example, at the start of each term, an informal pot-luck is held to bring members from all years and courses together for a catch up session over good food. In order to tide members over the holiday seasons, Singsoc organises annual dinners to celebrate Christmas and Chinese New Year surrounded by their family-away-from-home. Sporting events such as the annual Generation Games, held in the last term of the academic year, also serve to bring members of different years closer together through friendly competition.

Outside of the University, Warwick Singsoc also coordinates with other Singapore Societies in the UK to allow members to participate in external events such as the annual Nottingham Games, giving them a chance to rekindle old friendships or make new ones beyond the Warwick community. Warwick Singsoc's annual Theatre Production is also a golden opportunity for members to invite friends from other universities over, while gaining experience in acting, production management, logistics, stage craft or publicity.

For many, Singsoc is simply a place to feel comfortable and be yourself, no matter how far away from home.
